A subtle story with a paranormal touch. Follow a wonderful journey of change that will help you believe in magic again.

The books in this series can be read in any order.
Henry and his adult daughter, Chandra, are haunted by the past. Stuck in a state of mourning, they long to return to a time when the family matriarch was still alive.

Chandra misses her mother’s guidance. Henry wishes he could recapture the final precious moments with his wife. Each wonders if they will find happiness in life again until unexpected relationships shake up their perceptions of reality.

Henry’s new friendship with a neighbor blurs the boundaries between the living and the dead, and Chandra starts to see possibilities she has never noticed before.

Flying Lessons is a heartwarming, magical realism novel about relationships, hope, and healing that will stay with you long after you read the last page.

It shouldn't have been published. It doesn't work. A professional editor would have been a good idea. Everybody has to learn.

The mistakes are failing to offer competing theories for things like the black fog or the necklace, writing characters whose main interface with reader is thinking aloud, and not knowing the conventions that apply to supernatural encounters or to profound changes in perception.

I think Chandra, Henry and perhaps Jade are worth developing for another appearance.

There are models of very successful stories to follow. Henry James: The Turn of the Screw. Carlos Castaneda, for ambiguity. The Teachings of Don Juan, for flying.

Flying Lessons Uncommon Reality eBook Lovelyn Bettison Reviews

I enjoyed this book and the characters but felt like the story line was a little weird. Maybe some people let themselves get so wrapped up in loss and grief that they begin to see things that are not there, hear things that are not said. I am glad they were able to find each other.
I loved this book. In fact, I'm going to re-read it. It's a sweet story of lives redeemed by friendship and love. It deals with life as we know it and delves into the parts of life we think are not real, but which make life much richer, deeper and more joyous for us.
Seems like this author looked into my life from years ago. I never learned to fly but maybe it IS possible.
I am in my early sixties and this book really spoke to me. It's message is just beautiful...I have lost dear loved ones way to early in my life, and I know all to well the loneliness this book tells of...but after reading this, I feel so much better about it all...they are near...there is hope...and love never dies.
HLB has written a love story that begins with two people who have lost their spouses to disease and heart attack. They are stranded in their grievance without direction. The mans daughter is effected because she had attempted to fly. She meets her OAO and they fly. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
Flying Lessons never quite made it off the ground for me. This book couldn't make up it's mind what it wanted to be when it grew up. It started off with what seemed like a woman's quest to change her life. Quickly, it became a romance novel...with little romance. It ended with some spiritualism and EVERYONE experiencing ghosts . By the end of this book, I had completely lost interest and couldn't wait for the end.
This started out a little slow, but something about it kept me reading it. I really liked how the characters developed after their losses, and came to terms with them to be able to move on. Grief is something that sucks people in and it can be very difficult to move on from. Currently dealing with a similar situation with a loss, and this book gave me that little bit of hope to keep moving, and keep living.
